For Better, For Worse
Released April 17, 1919
Cast: Elliott Dexter, Gloria Swanson, Tom Forman, Raymond Hatton, Sylvia Ashton, Wanda Hawley
Director: Cecil B. De Mille
Plot: Swanson is torn between two men, a World War I soldier and a children's doctor. She marries the soldier but while he is away at war, her feelings for the doctor get stronger.
Swanson's second film with De Mille would not be as memorable as Don't Change Your Husband and it received some bad reviews. One device that De Mille liked to employ in his films were flashbacks in which the characters were presented in another time reliving the same situations. Some critics felt that these sequences were hooky and only gave De Mille an excuse to use elaborate sets and costumes. The critics were probably right but audiences loved it during the time. In For Better, For Worse, the flashback was set in Colonial times.
Next film - Male and Female
